Photo of a severely maltreated OFW goes viral on social media

SAUDI ARABIA – A photo of a Filipino overseas worker severely maltreated by his employer in Saudi Arabia has gone viral on social media.

The photo, which has been shared over 65,000 times on Facebook, is of Mensias Hernandez; a native of the province of La Union.

“Wala naman po akong kasalanan, basta na lang po nanuntok na lang siya nang walang tigil hanggang sa babagsak po ako. Nang makaiwas na po ako pumunta po ako sa kababayan na maaaring tumulong sa akin,” Hernandez said.

[I did not do anything wrong; he just started beating me until I almost fell down. When I was able to get away from him, I went to fellow Filipinos who could help me.]

According to an article published by ABS-CBN, the 58-year-old Hernandez worked as a car tinsmith in Ha’il in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Just two weeks before the incident, their employer, who is allegedly a police officer, also maltreated another Filipino, Joy del Monte, who manages the car workshop.

“Kasi ‘yong amo naming pulis din dito sa Ha’il, malaking pamilya, sir, walang nagtatangkang manghimasok, lumaban sa kanya,” del Monte said.

As disclosed in a story posted on Pinoy OFW, the employer, who was not named in the report, was jailed for one day after Hernandez filed a case against him.
